And that's a wrap!
Daniil Medvedev stops the Novak Djokovic Express on the last station. 27-1 is not bad, either. Medvedev wins his first Grand Slam title and much deserved. Djokovic will have to wait for No 21 while the quest for calendar Slam among the men continues. Rod Laver remains the last player to achieve that feat in 1972. Medvedev dropping just one set on the way to the title and far the superior player tonight. So we have two first-time major champions in the men's and women's events. And another different champion among the men at the US Open. With that, we bid you goodbye but our live coverage of sports continues starting with the IPL this coming week. Until then, it's good night from us at Firstpost!

DANIIL MEDVEDEV WINS THE US OPEN!
DANIIL MEDVEDEV IS THE US OPEN CHAMPION! He beats Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to win his first Grand Slam title while denying the Serb a 21st, and calendar Slam
04:04 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 4-6 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
As both players take the chair, the crowd continues to cheer for Djokovic. The Serb pumps his fist and smiles as the crowd continues to support him, back him and raise the roof, as you will, for him. He takes the court and looks visibly emotional. Medvedev serving for the title once again. A 23-shot rally to get the game going. And as always, Medvedev takes the point. Once again, another nervous exchange from the back, the crowd making noise in the middle of the point and Djokovic is unable to clear the highest part of the net. 30-0 to Medvedev. And he misses a forehand. Some in the crowd jeering Daniil as he serves. Match point Daniil! He moves up to a short ball and sends it for a forehand winner. Second CHAMPIONSHIP POINT! Lo-and-behold another double fault. He has another chance. WINS IT! Big serve and Djokovic is unable to get the return back
03:58 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 4-5 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
The crowd starting to go from supportive to unruly and disrespectful towards Daniil Medvedev. As he served for the Championship point in the last game, many wouldn't quieten down. Anyway, they're VERY loud and cheering every point that is going Djokovic's way. Medvedev with consecutive forehand errors and Djokovic has game points. Djokovic looks to serve and volley but the return goes wide anyway. Three straight games for Djokovic
03:55 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 4-6, 3-5 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Daniil Medvedev is serving for the US Open title. Djokovic has a change of shirt and change of momentum? Starts off with a fantastic forehand cross court winner. But Medvedev roars back with a 121mph ace down the T. Followed by a double fault - as you would. And then a 128mph serve that goes long from Djokovic's racquet. Djokovic looks to ride on the forehand but it goes long. MATCH POINT. CHAMPIONSHIP POINT, DANIIL MEDVEDEV! Went huge on the second serve, 120mph, only to hit a double fault. And then another. A third double fault of the game and suddenly Djokovic has a break point. Djokovic stays alive as Daniil finds the net on the forehand. That was a wildly erratic game from Daniil. Crowd is well behind Djokovic now.
03:49 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 2-5 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Novak Djokovic serving to stay in the match. A gorgeous drop volley makes it 30-15 after once again being pushed by Daniil Medvedev in the point prior. A forehand finds the net and it is 30-30. Djokovic holds with consecutive points
03:46 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 4-6, 1-5 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Medvedev apologises to Djokovic and seemingly the entire stadium as the ball hits the tape and goes over at 15-30. That could have been two break points instead it is 30-30. Once again, Medvedev comes through in a lengthy exchange. A 17-shot rally ends with Djokovic hitting the net. Game point for Daniil. Holds as Djokovic finds the net on return
03:44 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 1-4 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Djokovic avoids being bagelled in the third set. Holds to love and the crowd is well and truly behind him. Not that they've been anti him at all today
03:41 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 4-6, 0-4 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
This looks routine from Medvedev and rather meek from Djokovic now. Djokovic continues to miss and Medvedev continues to make him chase as many balls as possible. Holds after the ball goes over with the help of the net. A fitter Djokovic might have chased that down. Not this one.
03:36 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 0-3 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Mountain to climb for Novak Djokovic and it is getting bigger. Very quickly he's down 0-30 and has to take this game to have any chance. Looks to be physically struggling and trying his best to keep the points short. Moves up to the net for a serve-and-volley winner and makes it 40-30. Medvedev not letting this go. Brilliant backhand down the line and Djokovic is rooted to the spot. The backhand slice is into the net once again from Djokovic and Medvedev has a break point. BREAK! Medvedev has the finish line well and truly near him now. Djokovic missing a volley now
03:31 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 4-6, 0-2 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Twice in a game Djokovic makes shocking errors at the net. Simple shot to hit for a winner or apply pressure to but Novak misses both. Takes the game to deuce but is unable to make it count. Medvedev has his arm in the air, the crowd is up and applauding, Medvedev with great hitting from the back and then flicks the drop volley from Novak for a winner
03:28 (IST)

Second set: Daniil Medvedev 6-4

Djokovic* 4-6, 4-6 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Medvedev serving for the second set. And quickly picks up two points to go nearer to a two set lead. Creates three set points with sensational hands. Drop shot and then chases down Djokovic's cross court drop shot. Gets the ball up and over to find the corner. On set point... he hits a double fault. One gone begging. And another. Great rally, both players upping the intensity. 18-shot rally goes Djokovic's way. Not many of the long rallies have gone his way. Medvedev looks to find the sideline but misses. SECOND SET MEDVEDEV! The Russian with a shaky drop shot, not well disguised at all, but Djokovic misses his backhand
03:13 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 4-5 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Medvedev fighting and keeping himself in this game as Djokovic hits a 10th backhand error of the set with the Russian prolonging the point. On 30-30, Djokovic moves up and Medvedev's attempted lob goes long. The Serb closes the game out with a comfortable smash
03:10 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 3-5 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Daniil dances around the court. A cross court forehand, then going down the line and then moving up for the winner. He is cruising and makes it 40-0. And then holds after some exceptional tennis from the back. Sensational backhand pickup to take the attack back on Djokovic and holds with a forehand winner
03:05 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 3-4 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Poor tennis from Djokovic continues. He is making multiple errors and missing shots he could make in his sleep. Some routine groundstrokes going wide or into the net and it is 0-30. Brings it to 15-30 with an serve and volley. 30-30 now after Daniil misses a simple shot. Looks surprised that he missed that shot. Djokovic brings up game point with a serve down the T and the return goes long. Same route once again and the return is into the net. Djokovic holds
03:02 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 2-4 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
A 23-shot rally makes it 30-0 for Medeve on serve. Finding the absolute corner of the court, the last inch of the baseline for a forehand winner. Gets the hold after Djokovic's volley goes wide
02:57 (IST)
Djokovic 4-6, 2-3 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Djokovic with another routine backhand slice missed and it brings up two break points. Saves one with a big serve and the return goes long. BREAK! On the second, the volley approach isn't good enough and neither is the volley. Gets down volley but the racquet head is facing upwards and the ball goes long

Djokovic* 4-6, 2-2 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
27 shot rally at a crucial 30-30 point. Both players attacking and defending in that exchange. But it is Djokovic who errs in the end as his forehand goes long. On to deuce now as Medvedev misses a backhand. Yet another loose backhand brings up break point. The crowd is up, loud and cheering, urging, Djokovic to get the break. On second serve, some interruption halts play and Djokovic is pissed! On replaying the point, he has another second serve to deal with and loses the point with the drop volley not going over. Almost smacks the ball into the ball girl before stopping himself. Has another break point chance a moment later and this time Medvedev, very boldly, finds the corner with precision. On deuce, Djokovic doesn't get the return back and smacks his racket repeatedly in frustration. Not surprisingly, gets a warning for racquet abuse. Medvedev holds! That was very tough hold for the Russian

Djokovic 4-6, 2-1 *Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Things not going to plan for Novak Djokovic. Daniil Medvedev not being asked to produce sensational tennis in staying ahead. Djokovic misses a forehand and walks to the towel to take a moment to collect himself. Expectedly, looks anxious, nervous. Sees Medvedev's forehand land into the tramline to take the game to 30-30. Medvedev rocks into the forehand, loads a 91mph winner to go down the line. Break point for Medvedev now. Saved! A 120mph serve out wide denies Medvedev a break chance. A 104mph ace brings up game point. Not done yet. Djokovic sends his backhand into the net and the unforced error count reaches 14. Crowd gets up in unision after a lengthy rally during which Djokovic found the depth of the court before clinching it with Medvedev finding the net at an attempted pass. Djokovic closes the game out with a smash
02:33 (IST)
Djokovic* 4-6, 1-1 Medvedev (* denotes next server)
Djokovic starts with a love hold and creates three break point chances as Medvedev produces an errant service effort. Saves two with a winner and then an ace. On third, Djokovic hits his backhand slice into the net. Slaps his quad repeatedly in frustration. On deuce, Medvedev brings up game point with an ace. And closes the game out with a big serve and the return goes long

Djokovic with a very poor start on the serve so far. A second double fault makes it 0-30. The crowd cheers Novak to open his account. Medvedev helps slightly by hitting his backhand into the net. A forehand into the net from Djokovic, very uncharacteristic, and Medvedev has two break points. One saved with a perfect one-two - serve out wide and then a backhand winner directed towards the other corner. Second is saved as well. Djokovic moves up to the net and punches the high ball for a smash. Back-to-back aces get Djokovic out of a cage and he is on the board
