Lok Sabha panel won’t table Mahua Moitra expulsion report today

In light of the cash-for-query charges against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has decided not to table its report today.

When the report was presented to the Parliament, Moitra told reporters outside the Parliament House that she would have comments to make.

Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP who had initially brought up the accusations against Moitra, said that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress lawmaker, had "leaked the report."

Chowdhury emphasised in a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla last week that ejection was a "very serious punishment." He said that it was unclear if the committee had followed accepted practises and created a financial trail in the case.

Congress meet to chalk out strategy for Parliament winter session

To plan the course of action for the upcoming winter session of Parliament, the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group will convene at Sonia Gandhi's home at 5:00 p.m. today.

The opposition leaders’ protests against the BJP government over the “cash-for-query” affair and the Ethics Committee’s demand that TMC MP Mahua Moitra be expelled in connection with the incident set the tone for a turbulent start to Parliament’s winter session. The BJP, known for its aggressive tactics, was hoping to corner the Congress-led Opposition on the floor of both Houses following their recent three-pronged success in the state elections.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill 2023, which aim to amend the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, Indian Evidence Act, 1872, and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, are among the important bills that are anticipated to be discussed during the session, aside from Moitra’s demand for her expulsion. One of the other legislation aims to control the appointments of other election commissioners and the Chief Election Commission.

In addition, the Narendra Modi administration has proposed two additional measures for the forthcoming winter session of Parliament that will increase the reservation for women in legislative bodies to include legislatures in Jammu & Kashmir and Puducherry.

The government may essentially pass legislation during the winter session, which ends on December 22. The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 would take place over the course of 15 sittings.
